Great Lakes District
The 16th annual Great Lakes District Student Case Competition was held on February 25-26, 2011 in Downers Grove IL. This year 21 teams from colleges and universities in Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Kansas, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Texas participated, and were it not for a bad snow storm moving east through the Ohio Valley there would have been 23 teams. There were almost 200 student competitors. Adding to that a combination of academic advisors and APICS professional members brought the total attendance to over 235.
Cases were given to the teams at 7.00 P.M. Friday evening and the students got to work immediately. The student and professional attendees networked in a hospitality suite while the case authors answered clarifying questions until midnight. The written solutions were given to judges Saturday morning followed by afternoon oral presentations.
The event ended in a tie for the first time ever. The 1st place teams shared the top of the points table and their student chapters took away $1,500 in prize money split evenly. Had there not been a tie the first place team would have won $900 and the second place $600.
Planning for next year’s event will start soon. The 2012 Case Competition will offer a new, special, networking session for academicians in addition to the customary idea interchange and Association update for APICS volunteer leaders.
